OCTOBER @ Highland!

Happy Fall!
During October, our prek-2nd graders learned about Moses - starting from when he was a baby up to crossing the sea.  Our third graders continued their trek through the Bible and many earned their Bible covers!  Congratulations!  Our 4th and 5th graders are in the middle of a 13 week study on Paul and the Prophets.  They have gone through Romans, Colossians, Phillipians, 1 Corinthians, Ephesians and 1 Kings while talking about faith, love, joy, unity and diversity.

Our 4th and 5th grade TNT group had a great time reading the letters from their Grandpals and responding.  Then they did some bottle-flipping!  Check out the video and blogpost...we had a lot of fun!

We also had our first of two Circle of Grace lessons.  The teachers did an excellent job with a very well written curriculum and the conversations were wonderful.  I hope they continued at home!

And of course, we had our Trunk or Treat!  Even though it stormed and we had to move it inside, we still had a fantastic turn out and LOTs of FUN!!

Here are some pics and videos of the month...enjoy!

Bottle Flipping at Highland! 20 Variations to Bottle flippin'!

At our first TNT meeting we had a little battle of Bottle Flipping!  How can such a simple thing be so much fun :)  It's a fun and easy (and cheap) activity for the kids to bond over.  Here are 20 variations of bottle flipping to play with your group!

CHALLENGES!!

1.  How many can you flip at a time (and land)?  one in each hand? 2? 3?!
2.  Consistency contest - who can flip the most in a row?
3.  Can you "cap" it? (land it on it's cap) how many times in a row?
4.  Down the Table: Line up 10 bottles on the edge of the table...can you flip them all and land them?  How fast?
yes, I added food coloring to make it more colorful :)

We had one kid at each bottle and went down the line. 3 of our 8 hit it...but not in the same round :) Our best was 2 of 8 :)
Variations of Obstacles:  Can you land it on...

5.  a pedastal?
6.  table?
7.  chair?
8.  in a basket/trash can?
9.  a moving cart?

10.  Can you land a double flip? Triple flip?
11.  Stairs - can you land it on each stair going up? going down?  Can you stand at the top and land it at the bottom?  Can you stand at the bottom and land it at the top?
I watched a video on youtube of some people flipping and they said flipping up above you is hard...we tested it out. :)

it is hard!  We only had one hit it :)

12.  With a board and a block make a lever - an inclined plane...like a seesaw.  Flip off the bottle and land it!

Take the game to your playground!

13.  Land it down the slide...then up.
14.  Land it on a ledge.
15.  Can you land it while swinging?
16.  Can you land it when you're upside down?

GAME TIME!!

17.  If you have a smaller group, play H.O.R.S.E (you know, the basketball game).  First person flips the bottle.  If they make it, the next person has to land it the same way.  And so on.  If that person misses, they get an H.  Just remember, no 2 flips can be the same!

18.  Want a real challenge - flip the bottle up to a ledge above you.  Definitely harder!
19.  Trick shot! Get 2 bottles. flip one and land it right side up.  Flip another and land it upside down on top of the first! (cap to cap).
20.  Get a large table and tape coins, dollar bills, coupons for prizes, etc. to the table.  If you flip the bottle (and land it) onto the object you win it!!
this was their favorite game.  Each piece of paper had a prize on it - candy, poster, etc

I had 2 win!

Here's a video of our evening of flippin' fun! :)

September 2016 - Kick Off!!

After a fun (and hopefully relaxing?!) summer, it was nice to get back into the swing of things at Highland!  All of our programs have started back up - make sure you know what we have to offer for you and your child at Highland!  I don't want you to miss out!  Click here to see and download our brochure with all the information in it.

On September 11 we had our official kick-off: bounce houses (did you see the one where you fell one story?!), hot dogs, the first TNT and youth group, live music...and snow cones! :)  It was a fun and wonderful afternoon and it was great to see all my little friends again! :)

Our first TNT meeting - we bounced (yes, I actually jumped...as did Sarah and other parents!! terrifying! lol), ate pizza, discussed the year, and celebrated Paul's birthday.

The 3rd graders received their Bibles on the 18th.  Congratulations!  I want to see those Bibles being USED!!

We started Sunday school on the 11th after blessing and praying for our teachers.  Thank you to everyone who has volunteered to help teach our children!  You are definitely a blessing to them and me!

In September, the preschoolers learned a few stories - one was about Paul in jail!  So they built a jail to see what it may have looked like :)

The kindergartners and 1st/2nd graders learned the story of Joshua and how the walls came "tumbling down"! :) In October they will be learning the story of Moses - specifically when he was a baby and how he brought the slaves out of Egypt (plagues).

This class decorated boxes, stacked them up, then made them fall down!  I wish I'd gotten a picture or video of them knocking them down!  But I did hear them...all the way down the hall ;)  They had a blast!

Reading the story using the ipad Bible story app

The trumpets the K students made!  First, they listened to songs and "drew" the sound...then they painted them!  Beautiful work!

The 3rd graders have been getting to know each other, Ms. Parker and the Bible!  In the month of September the class has read through the story of the Tower of Babel.

The 4th and 5th grade class have been enjoying their new curriculum as well!

Thank you to everyone who has volunteered to assist and teach our children!  We appreciate you very much!
